I caught your report about Major Slatic tonight. It has special meaning for me because my son is currently in basic training at Ft. Benning, Georgia. The miracle of technology has made it possible to connect with other parents, wives, and family members of the guys in my sons company. It has been comforting to be able to connect with these families during those first few weeks of separation when we were all pretty torn - between pride, anxiousness and longing to have our sons back where it is safe.

Now after they have been in basic for three weeks there is something that really bothers me - so many of the family members are counting down the days until they graduate (July 30th). I, on the other hand, would be happy if my son stayed in basic for the next three years - even if it meant not seeing him. You see, these companies are infantry companies. If the guys aren't going to Airborne and/or Ranger School, I know where they are going - Afghanistan. There has been no one to really share that with and now I share it with you since my new FB Army friends either aren't thinking that far ahead or they don't want to share their thoughts with the group.

The big build-up in Afghanistan is this summer, so our green infantry soldiers are going right into the thick of things. I want the Drill Sergeants to be tough and mean and make my son aware of all of the dangers, so that he can survive.

There is something that I have really learned, people don't mean to ignore or dismiss the soldiers, they just don't understand. I hope your reports will bring it home in a real way how families are impacted by our country's need to have soldiers.

This is my son's dream and I support him, but I do not have to like it. I can't find the words to let you know how much I miss him, worry about him, and pray for him. Thank you for this blog where I can share my worries...

Patty...I truly understand all that you are feeling...I have felt all those things through two tours of my husband, Major Slatic. People tend to forget that there is still a war going on and that it is very frightening for the families back at home. Please feel free to friend me on FaceBook...hopefully I can give you alot of insight and some peace of mind. Thank your son for his service and thank you for yours...because you are serving also... This blog is fantastic, I hadn't seen any similar before. I have to accept I found it out by a lucky stroke, but I'm impacted with its quality. I hope you continue posting with the same passion you did it here.
